Liz welcomed the opportunity to engage in a formal assessment to uncover her talents, interests, values and transferable skills. During our conversations, she recalled being the go-to person for senior leadership. She excelled at planning and execution of business strategy, especially against aggressive deadlines.
She realized that she has a high need for achievement, a family value she had internalized. She felt an adrenaline rush after completion of a demanding project that gave her a sense of adventure. Our challenge was to replicate that feeling and integrate work into her current life.
Based on her new insight, we created a roadmap for exploring career options. We collaborated on crafting a personal brand and LinkedIn profile showcasing accomplishments and revised her resume, highlighting her strengths.
As she talked to her network about her intentions to return to work, she was presented with a consulting opportunity to manage a project for a well-known brand interested in launching a new product. She was quickly coached on interviewing and negotiating the terms for the engagement that would fit with her needs. She decided to take on the challenge and soon was in her element again.
She now consults to companies who want to get business initiatives off the ground.
Retained by Dan's company, our role was to help him transition into a new job. During our first meeting, Dan said he needed some time for self-reflection after being with one company for a very long time. He wanted to make a well-thought-out career decision before taking his next step.
We guided him through a thinking process with formal assessments and numerous conversations which revealed he is entrepreneurial at heart and that the long and successful career he enjoyed with his former company was due to a good culture fit. He liked taking ownership of decisions.
Dan, with this new revelation, started to explore the idea of buying a business. His adventure began when he ran into a longtime friend who had a successful veterinary practice in the city. Dan had always been an animal lover, especially of dogs.
His friend was looking for a partner to start a pet concierge business but was too busy with his practice. He needed Dan's operations skills to get the business off the ground.
After evaluating the pros and cons of partnering with a friend, he decided to go into business investing in this new venture that would capitalize on the robust clientele his friend built in his veterinary practice. After two years they were able to turn enough of a profit to start a second location.
Carl was financially comfortable after the sale of his company, but he was missing being a trusted advisor to his clients. He sought career help to figure out what he wanted to do. Having high energy and an independent and entrepreneurial mindset, he wanted to be part of a company culture that embraced his style.
Through our conversations it became apparent that Carl enjoyed consultative selling and relationship building, a valuable skill set integral to his success in building a business. Initially, he was thinking of working for one of his former clients on a part-time basis, providing his technical expertise. Based on our assessment of his preferences, we eliminated his initial target.
Carl did not have a resume, bio or an updated LinkedIn profile. After being in business for over 30 years, he needed advice on how to present himself in interviews and talk about his accomplishments.
Together we formulated other career options that eventually led to an offer from a consulting firm to represent their regional office as an account manager. He gladly accepted the offer, capitalizing on his sales and relationship building skills and giving him the flexibility to work from his retirement location.
